Naturopathic
Medicine
Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are clinically trained in natural
therapeutics. They offer a unique approach to medicine that
is rooted in both healing tradition and cutting-edge science.
Naturopathic physicians rely heavily on natural and nutritional
therapies, but they are skilled in conventional diagnoses and
treatment as well. In naturopathic medicine, the body’s
profound ability to heal is supported through treatments that
aim to “first do no harm” and that address the cause
of symptoms, rather than merely provide symptom management.
Dr.
Brooke will help you identify obstacles to your optimal health,
such as diet habits or patterns and lifestyle factors including
exercise, psychosocial stress, sleep, etc. During a one-hour
initial consultation, you will discuss your individual concerns
and identify specific needs. Dr. Brooke will then recommend
a treatment plan that may include dietary and lifestyle recommendations,
herbs, nutritional supplements, exercise prescription, hydrotherapy,
acupuncture, homeopathic remedies and other natural therapies.
You will learn ways to implement a healthy lifestyle, and you
will receive a customized treatment program designed to minimize
disease, maximize prevention and create optimal health. Because
customized care is at the core of thrive services, Dr. Brooke
will determine the frequency of follow-up progress assessments
on an individual basis.
Acupuncture
& Traditional Chinese Medicine
Many,
but not all, naturopathic doctors use acupuncture and Chinese
herbs as therapy. Historically, Chinese Medicine used both herbal
medicine and acupuncture as treatment, however, many modern-day
practitioners use one or the other or use them in combination
with other medical therapies. Dr. Brooke holds Masters degrees
in both acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine. She uses both
in conjunction with naturopathic and conventional medicine.
Acupuncture
is based on a 4,000-year-old practice of inserting sterile,
disposable, fine needles into specific points on the body. These
points are precise locations on a network of meridians that
run along the body’s surface. Through these meridians
the needles access energy known as qi (roughly pronounced “chee”).
If the flow of qi is insufficient, unbalanced or interrupted,
illness may occur. Stimulating or dispersing qi is a central
tenant of Chinese Medicine, as is balancing the opposing forces
of yin and yang and tonifying or moving the blood. While acupuncture
is most popular for its effectiveness in alleviating pain, it
also helps treat allergies/asthma, fatigue and sleep disorders,
arthritis, PMS, digestive disorders, addictions and much more.
